Cathy, Giles and The BootThe building where The Boot now stands began life in the middle of the seventeenth century as a residential property. Around the turn of the nineteenth century the property was taken on by a local bootmaker called William Kite. Mr Kite supplemented his income by opening part of his property as an ale house, and so The Boot Inn was born. There followed many generations of innkeepers until the present day, where the Boot Inn is now run by Cathy and Giles Dickinson who would like to welcome you into their home.
Cathy and Giles strive to maintain the integrity and honesty of The Boot as a real British inn. They avoid modern generic pub food, such as chili or lasagne, or the pretensions of the gastro-pub trend. Instead, they have stuck to what made British inns great: traditional British fare made with care and attention to detail, coupled with a well-kept cellar of real ales.
The food is freshly prepared by Giles and is sourced locally where possible, or from some of the best producers in the country. This results in a menu that changes almost daily and which reflects the changing seasons of Britain. The menus are displayed on chalkboards mounted to the walls, which lends itself to the constant change of what’s on offer as well as maintaining the tradition of The Boot. The food ranges from hearty game, tender roast beef, succulent lamb and pork, to carefully prepared delicate fish dishes and crisp fresh salads. As well as traditional favourites such as sausage and mash, a ploughman’s lunch or splendid roast dinner for Sunday lunch. Licensed by the Wadworth brewery in Devizes, as you would expect, the Boot offers some excellent ales, such as 6X, Henry’s IPA or Corvus, as well as a regularly changing guest ale. There are a number of lagers available on tap, and for the cider drinker there is a refreshing pint of Weston’s Stowford Press. Cathy and Giles also keep a fine selection of wines, many of which are available by the glass or by the bottle. Behind the bar there is also a nice selection of spirits and soft drinks available, as well as some fine coffee to round off your visit to The Boot.
The Main Dining Room houses the bar and offers seating for up to 20 guests, including fireside tables, and a comfy sofa for a relaxed, casual break.
The Boot Room can accommodate an additional 14 guests, and its location away from the lively nature of the bar provides a more intimate setting.
The Garden seats 24 people on traditional picnic tables, and there is open space for lawn games. Bring your boules and have a nice afternoon out.
